Massage Treats Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve at the wrist becomes compressed, resulting in pain, tingling, and numbness in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and ring finger. Sometimes the sensory symptoms may seem to extend to the entire hand, forearm, arm, and occasionally the shoulder. The symptoms often worsen during sustained or repetitive hand use. Carpal tunnel syndrome affects 3 to 6 percent of the population. Recognizing the symptoms and early diagnosis can help prevent irreversible nerve damage, says Dr. Mark Saleh, Sutter Health Neurologist.

There are three primary treatment options for carpal tunnel syndrome. The most conservative approach involves wearing a wrist splint that can be obtained over the counter to immobilize the wrist. The second treatment option involves injection of cortisone into the carpal tunnel to help reduce inflammation. The third is a surgical procedure.

Other treatments that are recommended include yoga, physical and occupational therapy techniques, as well as specific massage techniques that are unique for this issue. The Clinical Deep Tissue therapists at Massage Therapy Center Palo Alto are skilled to deal with the issues of carpal tunnel syndrome, to help clients relieve symptoms and avoid surgery.
